Winsford drama student, 11, scoops top prize at monologue finals

Greenroom Drama Academy student Erin Langford, 11, wowed judges in Manchester with her side-splitting piece about one of the greatest plights children face – eating their greens.

The young actress faced off against her sister Ellie Langford, 16, fellow Greenroom Drama Academy student Erin Anglem-Skillicorn, 15, and two other entrants from around the UK.

Erin said: “I was really nervous but when I got into it I began to enjoy it. At the beginning I was shaking.

“I thought I did badly, so I was really shocked when I won. I felt a little bit bad for Ellie but I was really happy I won. I think she was a bit shocked.”

During the finals, contestants have one minute to perform any monologue of their choice.

Erin called on the writing skills of her mum, Beverly Green, who made the finals Monologue Slam UK finals last December.

The monologue began on a serious tone, showing a young girl in distress, before taking a rather more humorous turn.

Beverly said: “Eventually the crowd learns that she is telling her mum she doesn’t like Brussels sprouts. She tells her they look like bogies!”

Erin added: “I tried to make it look like I was crying. I thought of sad things to help me.”

Erin hopes the award will be the first of many, and plans on defending her crown later this year.

“I was a really proud mum and a proud drama teacher too,” Beverly, who runs classes at the Greenroom Drama Academy in Winsford and Weaverham, said.

“My two daughters and Erin have never done anything like this before.

“There must have easily been 200 people in the theatre. I was immensely proud of all of them, they all did so, so well.

“Erin winning was just the icing on the cake. As far as I’m concerned they had all won their places to be there.”

Classes at the Greenroom Drama Academy run on Tuesdays in Winsford and Wednesdays in Weaverham. Classes are for five to 18 years old.
