TWO teen friends from Winsford Academy are on a mission to raise the cash to travel to Borneo to help disadvantaged children.

Amy Jones,14, and Katie Foye, 15, both from Winsford, are aiming to raise around £4000 for the trip, in partnership with the expedition specialist Camps International.

Since October the girls have raised around £500 through various fundraisers and are hoping to raise around £200 with their latest event, a bingo night at the Knights Grange on December 8.

“Camps International did an assembly at school which really inspired us,” Amy said. “We went to a meeting to find out more and despite being quite nervous about it we decided to do it.”

Amy and Katie are hoping they can make the trip to Borneo, the third-largest island in the world and the largest island of Asia, in 2016.

“We will be teaching English to disadvantaged children, we are spending a week doing environmental things like planting trees to help the rain forest,” Katie said.

“We will be spending a week at an Orangutan sanctuary to help them get back into the wild and we will also be doing physical work like helping to build things, such as improving toileting facilities and quality of life for the people who live there.

“It's a once in a life time opportunity and will benefits to us, our future and the Borneo community,” Amy added.

So far in their fundraising drive the girls have held a car-boot sale, held a psychic evening and have been selling football cards at local businesses and with friends and family.

Amy said: “The bingo event is our first big fundraiser. We've written to lots of local businesses and received some great prizes to be won on the night.”

The girls have already planned numerous events for 2015 to help them achieve their target including a sponsored dog walk and an 80s fancy dress disco.

Amy’s mum, Lisa Tydd, said: “We are really proud of the girls, not just for taking part in the trip but by all the fundraising they are busy doing, it’s fabulous to see them so excited.

"It will be such a challenge for them both being away from home for a month so far away from home at such a young age.

"If they can't take their mobiles, it will be a long four weeks, however we all feel that the experience will be so rewarding and will help them both with their personal development and future."
