WINSFORD Salt Mine held an Act of Remembrance Service to honour former employees who lost their lives during the First World War.

Canon Christopher Humphries from Whitegate Church conducted the service on November 11.

Graham Orme, Training Officer with 45 years’ service at Compass Minerals UK read the 55 names of those employees who lost their lives during the First World War.

Tom Maddock, the Company’s youngest employee on an Engineering Apprenticeship read the names of the 11 employees who lost their lives in the Second World War.

A spokeswoman for Winsford Salt Mine said: “Thank you to all those who participated in the service and to our retired employees who joined the company in this Act of Remembrance.

“Those who gave their lives will never be forgotten.”

Stephen Briscoe, Stores Controller in the mine, laid a wreath at the Cenotaph on Bradford Road Stephen’s great uncle, John Thomas, lost his life aged 17 and is named on the Cenotaph.

Denis Jackson, a Process Operator in the mine, laid a wreath in remembrance of the lives lost during the First World War.

Denis served with the 22 Cheshire Regiment for over 7 years before joining Compass Minerals UK with postings in Northern Ireland, Canada and Jamaica and public duties at Buckingham Palace, The Tower of London and the Edinburgh Tattoo.

Two minutes silence was held across the site and underground in the mine to pay their respects.
