A FORMER soldier hoping to build a centre for former veterans near Winsford is drawing on inspiration from a First World War battlefields trip to get his scheme off the ground.

Joe O’Connor wants to build 23 lodges in Little Budworth where struggling services personnel can rebuild their lives in Civvy Street with his Sanctuary for Veterans charity.

A recent visit to First World War cemeteries and battlefields in Belgium and France has given fresh impetus to Joe’s quest, which was recently featured on BBC TV.

He said: “The visit was an opportunity to reflect on the ultimate sacrifice that was made by so many.

“It also made you think about those who did make the journey home; their experiences and the impact of the physical and mental injuries had on their lives.

“When they most needed the support, as has been well-documented, it was not available.

“While many things about warfare have changed, there are still enormous gaps in the support for those who suffer injury as a result of their experiences in the forces.

“With the conflicts our service personnel have faced in the last 30 years, many have, like those from the First World War, returned with life-changing injuries and conditions and often without friends and comrades.”
