MORE than 250 people packed into the Lifestyle Centre to celebrate the cream of community spirited Winsfordians on Friday, March 28.

The annual Mayor’s Oscars ceremony saw unsung locals thanked for the efforts in making the town a better place to live, work and play.

The glittering event opened with a rousing Hollywood number by local singer Krystal, before comedian Don Reid introduced the various awards.

Mayor, Cllr Mike Kennedy, said: “It was a fabulous evening, with everyone from the compere, the performers and of course all the Oscar nominees being from this great town of ours.

“Winsford and its people often don’t get the praise they deserve and the evening was a wonderful way of celebrating their achievements.”

Between the awards, local singer Sam Lyon performed the single, Anchors, from her recently released EP.

Minibeat, Megan Delaney, Will Garner, Sam Bithell and Krystal and Trish under their alter-ego of Purple Tonez kept the crowds entertained.

Meanwhile, prolific Youtube filmmaker Mark Curzon premiered his latest Winsford-centric creation to the audience.

A cash raffle raised almost £400 for the Winsford Youth Forum and St Luke’s Hospice.

The climax of the evening saw the Mayor make special awards to Winsfordians Kath Clarke and Ernie Welch for their work in support of local charities.

He then announced the winners of the Hollywood Boulevard style ‘Walk of Achievement’ award, which went to the CLAW Group – a community group set up by the residents of Crook Lane and Wharton Gardens to help improve the local environment.

Local Wharton councillor, Dave Edwards, congratulated CLAW on their success.

He said: "This award is very well deserved. CLAW are an excellent group who help make Wharton a nice place to live and enjoy."

The evening ended with a bang – literally- with fireworks and a confetti shower.
