MORE people will be bringing home the bacon thanks to the creation of news jobs at a Winsford meat processing factory.

Morrisons are advertising for 50 new positions at their Bostock Road packaging plant due to an upturn in demand.

And the supermarket said it wanted to invest in Winsford because of its experienced workforce and prime business location.

“Winsford is the perfect place because it’s very close to our main distribution centre in Rudheath, and for the motorway network to get products quickly to the rest of the country,” explained site manager Andrew Walton.

“As the business has grown we are working more as further stores open. We also have the new local stores that Morrisons are launching and we’re preparing to offer internet shopping.”

“There is also the skill base here that we can tap into. There’s been a history here in Winsford through Harris Bacon, Grampian Country Foods and Vion,” added HR Manager Alison Morris.

“We’ve seen a huge increase in production since Morrisons took over the factory. It’s been fantastic. At the moment we’re recruiting both operative roles and management roles.”

The supermarket bought the 9,755 metre square (2 1/2 acres) facility from Vion in March 2012, and during the past year created 50 existing positions.

With other sites in Turriff, Aberdeenshire , Spalding in Lincolnshire and Colne in Lancashire, the Winsoford plant is one of four nationwide that receive and process products from Morrisons abattoirs .

This ‘vertically integrated’ supply chain allowed the supermarket facility to avoid being caught up in horsemeat scandal.

“We can prove provenance to British cattle on our products and that’s helped us as a good news story recently, with the recent issue surrounding horse meat,” said Andrew.

The new mayor of Winsford, clr Mike Kennedy, has made expanding jobs one of his priorities for the forthcoming year.

He said: “The creation of 50 new jobs at Morrison's Meat Plant is marvellous news for the town of Winsford.

“I believe this welcome investment proves that Winsford has the capability for growth and has the confidence of business to be here and to expand.

“When we talk about added infrastructure for the Town, job creation is part of this. May I take this opportunity to thank Morrisons for showing faith in Winsford, not only did they purchase the original factory but have now expanded and created extra employment, well done.”

Local Wharton ward clr Dave Edwards added: “I welcome new job opportunities for the residents of Wharton and value Morrisons investment in the local economy.”
