Gifted footballer knocked back by serious illness
 |
| Nathan Southern |
A PROMISING young footballer from Winsford will miss the end of the season with a life-threatening condition.
Nathan Southern, 17, of Lulworth Close, is a striker for Nantwich Town FC. He had a swollen hand after falling on his shoulder when playing football with some friends on Easter Monday.
He went to Leighton Hospital a week later and doctors diagnosed deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder.
Nathan said: "My arm was blue so I went to the hospital and I was a bit worried but the doctors said that I'd be all right."
Nathan attends Winsford sixth form and studies AS sports studies, English literature, biology and psychology. He trains with Nantwich Town on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
Head coach Steve Davis, 42, said: "He is a joy to have around and we're gutted about his injury. When the test results came through and we found out he had DVT we were shocked.
"It's a blow to the first team and the youth team. He was quite prolific. He's one for the future and capable of playing at a higher level. This can happen to anyone - you just can't legislate for it."
Nathan's dad, Neil, 49, a draftsman, said: "It's very rare to get deep vein thrombosis in the shoulder because it's usually in the leg. He was just messing around with some friends at college and he's quite muscular around the shoulders so it might be due to that."
Nathan will go for regular blood tests to see how thick his blood is and have his main test in October.
