MP Since - 1999 (By-election) Majority - 6,195 Born - 01/04/1957. Married, 2 sons & 1 daughter.

Education - Loretto School, Mombasa, Kenya; Handbridge School, Chester; Sedburgh School, Cumbria; Emmanuel College, Cambridge; Chester College of Law.

Previous Occupation -Solicitor, Articles, Freshfields (1981-88); Group Company Secretary & Director of Strategy/Corporate Affairs, Redland plc; Founded his own international business consultancy (1998-); PA to Institute of Chartered Secretaries & Administrators (2000-), Manufacturing Technologies Association (2005-).

Personal Overview - Won the 1999 Eddisbury By-election with a small mid term swing to the Conservatives. Has a legal background, with business experience (setting up his own Management Consultancy in Air Travel & Construction). He has shown some concern for countryside issues, but is not involved in hunting or fishing etc. Has gradually advanced through the opposition ranks during the tenure of several different party leaders to become a middle ranking spokesman.

Political History - Chairman of Chichester Conservative Association (1998-99). MP Eddisbury (July 1999- by-election). Former Secretary of the Conservative Legal and Trade & Industry Committees. Member of the Education & Employment Select Committee, Education Sub-Committee (1999-2001), PPS to Francis Maude , Shadow Foreign Secretary (2000), PPS to Conservative Party Chairman, Rt. Hon. Michael Ancram MP (2001-02). Opposition Whip (2001-02). Shadow Foreign Secretary to the Treasury (2002), Paymaster General (2002-03), Shadow Secretary of State for Industry (2003-05), Shadow Minister for Education & Skills (2005), for Health (2005-).

Characteristics - Syndic (Non Executive) Director of the Cambridge University Careers Service. His wife is a District Nurse. Became a MP in 1999 in the by-election caused by the resignation of Sir Alistair Goodlad, following his accceptance of the post of Governor General of Australia.
