Renault Clio Review

Renault Clio

Overall

rating: 4 stars

The Clio has always been a thoroughly sensible supermini, with a mid-life facelift helping to sharpen the case of the current generation in the face of tough competition from newer rivals.

The revised front-end design has been inspired by the look of the larger Megane and Laguna, although the Clio carries off the new headlight treatment better than either of its bigger sisters. The cabin is still spacious by supermini standards, with enough room for four adults to travel in reasonable comfort and a decent-sized boot. Only more expensive versions get the classier-feeling soft-touch materials in the cabin, though. Buyers can also opt for an integrated TomTom satnav that's considerably cheaper than traditional manufacturer-fitted systems.

On the road the Clio puts in an impressively mature performance. Basic versions aren't the most involving drive thanks to light steering, but the Clio is a quiet, composed cruiser that's capable of taking everything from the urban trundle to long motorway journeys in its stride.

The basic 1.2 litre petrol engine lacks much in the way of urge, buy the more powerful 1.2 litre petrol turbo has plenty of punch and also returns better fuel economy. Two 1.5 litre 'dCi' diesel engines are available, with 86 bhp and 106 bhp, with both offering strong performance and respectable economy.

At the top of the range, Renault offers two performance derivatives. The 'warm' Clio GT uses a 128 bhp 1.6 litre petrol engine to deliver respectable urge, while the range-topping Renaultsport 200 is the hottest supermini on the block - especially with the firmer 'Cup' suspension settings.

What's to like

1. Handsome styling
2. Mature driving experience
3. Storming Renaultsport 200

What's not to like

1. Pricey compared to rivals
2. Relatively high CO2 emissions
3. Light-feeling steering.

Environment

rating: 3 stars

The Clio's green credentials are poor by segment standards, with only one engine - the dCi 86 diesel - putting out below 120g/km of CO2.

Styling

rating: 4 stars

The Clio has always been a handsome supermini, and a moderate mid-life facelift has sharpened its looks with new, Megane-like headlights.

Handling

rating: 4 stars

The Clio drives with the maturity of a considerably larger car - light steering is the only real dynamic weakness.

Comfort

rating: 4 stars

Seats are supportive over longer journeys but the ride quality can get bumpy over rougher roads. Refined at cruising speeds.

Quality

rating: 3 stars

Solidly assembled, but cabin materials feel downmarket compared to some rivals, especially on the cheaper versions that don't get soft-feel surfaces.

Performance

rating: 4 stars

The basic petrol engine lacks grunt but the other powerplants all offer respectable performance, and the range-topping Renaultsport 200 is a firecracker.

Roominess

rating: 4 stars

Still one of the biggest superminis, the Clio offers plenty of room for both front and rear seat occupants, and the boot is one of the largest in the segment, too.

Costs

rating: 3 stars

Petrol versions are let down by indifferent fuel economy and CO2 ratings that are considerably higher than some rivals. That said, residual values are reasonably solid and the Clio is cheap to maintain.

Value

rating: 3 stars

Still one of the more expensive superminis, despite limited standard equipment on the more basic versions.

Stereo

rating: 3 stars

The standard audio system is lacks power and definition but the upgraded version is good and features iPod connectivity. Optional integrated TomTom satnav offers no discernible benefit over a cheaper portable navigation system.
